How De-Ice Boots Work, and Why the Rubber Matters
Pneumatic boots shed ice by inflating and flexing. Rubber that has dried out or started to deteriorate doesn't last as long and can lose performance.
Boot at rest: ice builds up
In icing conditions, ice forms on the rubber boot that covers the wing's leading edge.
Boot inflated: ice breaks away
Tubes inside the boot inflate, cracking the ice so the airflow can carry it away. The rubber has to flex freely for this to work well.
What Wears Out De-Ice Boots in Southern California
Even if you rarely fly into ice, your boots are aging every day the aircraft sits on the ramp.
Ozone
Ozone attacks the neoprene that boots are made of, and the Los Angeles region has some of the highest ozone levels in the country.
Sun and heat
UV exposure fades and dries the rubber, leaving boots dull and gray instead of a deep, even black.
Bugs, grime and fuel
Baked-on bugs and dirt hide damage, and fuel or harsh solvents can harm the rubber and its bond to the wing.
What We Do, and What Your Mechanic Does
Boot treatment is care, not repair. We keep the rubber clean and protected, and we tell you if anything needs a mechanic's attention.
Clean, protect and check
- Gentle cleaning that removes bugs, grime and old residue
- A protectant made for de-ice boots, applied evenly
- A close look under good light for cracks, pinholes, scuffs and lifting edges
- Photos of anything that looks concerning
Repair and system checks
- Patching cuts and repairing damage
- Boot removal and replacement
- Inflation and system checks
- Inspections required by your maintenance program
Our De-Ice Boot Treatment Process

We remove bugs, dirt and old residue with a gentle cleaner made for rubber.
Inspect
With the boots clean, we check every inch under good light for signs of wear.
Treat
A boot protectant is applied evenly to condition the rubber and help guard it against ozone and UV.
Report
You get before-and-after photos, plus a note of anything your mechanic should see.

De-Ice Boot Treatment FAQ
How often should de-ice boots be treated?
Follow your boot manufacturer's and maintenance program's guidance. Protectants are commonly reapplied at regular intervals, often about twice a year, and boots that sit outside in the sun benefit from regular care.
Do you repair damaged boots?
No. Repairs belong with your mechanic. If we find cracks, pinholes, cuts or lifting edges, we photograph them and let you know right away.
Which aircraft do you treat?
Any aircraft with pneumatic boots, including turboprops, twins and boot-equipped singles such as the Piper M350.
Is the treatment safe for the rubber?
Yes. We use products made for de-ice boots and never harsh solvents or fuel-based cleaners, which can damage the rubber.
Will treated boots look different?
Yes. Faded, gray boots return to a deep, even finish, so the leading edges look as sharp as the rest of the aircraft.
How quickly will I get a quote?
Every request receives our Wheels-Up Quote: a price and a time slot within 2 office hours of your text, or we'll take $50 off your detail.
